The Faculty of Science is looking for pro-active and self-motivated individuals to join our Taught Programmes support team. We currently have two vacancies:

• One full-time, permanent
• One full-time, fixed-term until June 2020

You will play a vital role in providing administrative support for a number of our taught programmes, ensuring their smooth and efficient operation.

You should have previous experience of working in a busy office environment in an administrative role. Attention to detail is very important, as is the ability to manage a busy workload with conflicting priorities. You will need to work closely with other team members, academic colleagues and students from across the world, so effective communication skills are essential. You will be an excellent team player with a high degree of flexibility, able to work on own initiative and a quick learner. You should have good computer skills, with a proficiency in Word and Excel and the ability to learn use of database systems. 

Skills in the use of University specific software (Moodle, SAMIS/SITS and Business Objects) are desirable though not essential. Most important is an interest in our work and a willingness to become fully involved in the life of the Faculty and its departments.

The 72-bedroom Scotland’s Hotel and Leisure Club hotel in the town of Pitlochry, Perthshire, has been sold in an off-market deal to Irish-owned CastleCollection.com, off a guide price of £2.5m for the freehold property and business.

The hotel features a lounge, restaurant and swimming pool, as well as planning consent for 24 additional bedrooms, and was sold by Julian Troup, head of Colliers’ UK Hotels Agency, on behalf of the Crerar Hotel Group.

Troup said: “The acquisition of Scotland’s was conducted in a highly confidential fashion and is a further example of domestic and overseas buyers looking to secure a hotel in a prime Scottish location.”

CastleCollection.com, which is owned and run by the MacCumhaill family, said the acquisition forms the group’s seventh hotel property across Scotland, Ireland and Wales and joins Fishers Hotel and Atholl Palace, also in Pitlochry.

Fionn MacCumhaill, managing director of the CastleCollection.com,added: “We are delighted to add Scotland’s Hotel & Leisure Club to our collection, which will strengthen the hotel base and tourist offering, in what we believe is the heart of Scotland.

“Pitlochry is a great choice for staycation tourism and we aim to create a modern metro boutique hotel with spa to grow this segment of the market.

MacCumhaill added: “We will be investing a further £2m over the coming year to develop Scotland’s Hotel & Leisure Club into a modern vibrant metro boutique hotel, so keep an eye on ScotlandsHotel.com for updates and great new special offers.”

There have been reports from colleagues that a number of people have been seen using their phone while driving on campus.

When driving, any error involving fellow road users or pedestrians could be catastrophic and using a phone has been shown to have a more detrimental impact on safety than drinking certain amounts of alcohol.

Superintendent Andy Williams, Avon & Somerset Police, recently said: “Whatever’s happening on your phone isn’t worth the risk.”

Inspirational applicants are sought for an open-ended, full-time Lecturer (Assistant Professor) post in Environmental Chemical Engineering the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Bath, UK. This is integral to the successful operation and development of the new MSc course in Environmental Engineering in the Department to start in October 2019.

You will be a highly ambitious PhD graduate, with a good first degree in Chemical Engineering or a very closely related discipline. You will have a growing publications record and international reputation appropriate to your career stage, and fit one or more of the Department’s research centres (in brief in Water, Separations and Bio-processing). Potential for winning and delivering on research grants and successful supervision of research students and staff, is expected. Capability and willingness to teach Environmental Chemical Engineering at postgraduate level (including in design), and to contribute to academic management and leadership, are also expected.

The successful applicant will work in a progressive and successful academic environment, and will benefit from the collaborative and well-established Department and Faculty system at the University. This is supported by a strong mentoring environment in the Department, and the University’s professional development programme for new staff.
