How long have you worked at the Uni? What does your role involve?

I have been here a year and a half. I am a Sports Assistant which is a customer serving role, so I’m around the STV helping out students and visitors, and setting up sporting events. I also lifeguard and make sure the STV is kept in good condition, with a little bit of security and reception work too.

What would you most like to achieve while at the University?

It’s my most favourite job that I’ve ever had, I really love working with young people. I just really want to give back to the community at Bath, as I have found quite a peaceful place here.

What piece of advice would you like to give to a student?

Enjoy it! When I was at university I had a good time, but it wasn’t anywhere as nice as Bath – there was no bunnies running about the place! This is a haven in comparison. I went to Liverpool for uni which is quite a big city.

Who was your most influential teacher, and why?

Probably my parents. I grew up in a split family. One of the reasons I am the Equality and Diversity officer for my department is because I studied Sociology, which my father was very into. He was a bouncer when I was born, but he didn’t want my role model to be a black man using physical violence to earn a living. So he went to uni to be a mature student, to teach me that I could do it, and without that I doubt I would have ever gone to university.

My mother was raising two male children by herself and had a difficult time, but the cream rises to the top and she is amazing too.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a firefighter. It was one of the reasons I decided to work here, because there was free access to the gym. It’s still something I might pursue, as I’m still only in my mid-twenties. I like to give back to the community because it has given me a lot.

What was your first job?

I worked in promotions for a nightclub. It was an advert on the internet saying they were looking for young attractive people, and I had just turned 18 and I thought “This will be modelling, I might get a job but at least I’ll meet some beautiful girls!” but it was promotion work for a bar, and I did get the job.

Where is your favourite holiday destination and why?

I haven’t been on that many holidays, but I did go to Amsterdam recently and it surprised me how beautiful and how cultured it actually is. I think the reputation it has as a party city is misplaced. It has more canals than Venice, and it’s really beautiful.

What’s your favourite book or album and why?

Darcy Grey’s ‘The Last Shot’ was really good. I’m dyslexic and don’t read a lot of books, but it’s about basketball. A sports writer went to Coney Island which is a really deprived area in America that is famous for producing basketball prodigies. They found a 14 year old future MBA all-star as he was growing up, and they went to his high school to follow his team. It talks about how millionaire businesses and MBA scouts would come and watch them, and how this was influencing the aspirations and personalities of the high school kids who have grown up in poverty. I finished the book really quickly for me, it was great.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?

Muhammed Ali, Abraham Lincoln or Malcom X – that’s my top three.

Tell us your favourite joke

This is a Sean Lock joke from his stand-up comedy routine, right at the end he says:

“I found out that my wife was having an affair, she said it was because she was bored and knew everything about me. But what she didn’t know was that this whole time I was the Riddler!”

At which point he completely undresses and underneath his suit that he’d been wearing for two hours he has on a bright green jumpsuit with a question mark on the front!

How long have you worked at the Uni? What does your role involve?

I joined the Department of Psychology as a Senior Lecturer in September 2016 but worked at the University of Bath previously between 2001 and 2008. I also completed my PhD here too in what is now, the Centre for Pain Research. That makes me both staff and alumni. My role involves teaching on the Masters in Health Psychology and being responsible for the placements that our health psychology students undertake. Research is also a big focus on my role and I enjoy working on projects in my research area, which looks at how children and their families experience pain.

What would you most like to achieve while at the University?

I would really like to raise the profile of paediatric pain, both through my own work and through inspiring students to become the future research leaders in this field. That’s a timely aim given that I am a core member of the Bath Centre for Pain Research and the Centre is celebrating its 10th birthday this year. Raising the profile of our collective work and activities is important.

Name one thing that makes you feel proud to work at the University of Bath?

As ever the people. We have a fantastic community of students and staff across the university. Having great colleagues really matters.

What piece of advice would you like to give to a student?

Believe in yourself and work hard.

Who was your most influential teacher/educator, and why?

I am not sure I could name just one. There have been many influential people throughout my career so it would be impossible to choose. Sometimes because they are just generally doing fantastic work that I hugely admire and/or because they gave me a sense of believing in myself, opportunities to progress and confidence. I have learned many different things from individuals and I am very grateful to them.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was really young I wanted to be a secretary like my Mum but that changed to wanting to train as a journalist when I was a bit older. I even went to University to study English Literature so was clearly quite determined that English in some format was my future. I quickly realised that it was not for me though and psychology was the way forward.

What’s the one thing you know now that you wish you’d known when you were younger?

That whilst it is great to have plans (I’m a real planner), you do also need to be flexible about them and open to opportunities. Life does not always play out the way you think it will and being able to explore other ways of getting where you want to go is important. You learn new things and might even find a totally different direction.

What was your first job?

I worked as a clinic assistant on the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children at the University of Bristol. This really involved administering tests of psychological and physical functioning to children aged 7 and 8 years. It was my first psychology job and I loved it.

If you could start your own dream business, what would it be?

This is tricky, as I would have to say that I am particularly gifted in this department. I would love to have been a historian though, does that count? I totally love history.

Where is your favourite holiday destination and why?

I really love Canada and am always very happy there. It think that my absolute favourite would have to be Vancouver Island. Some very happy memories as it’s where we went on honeymoon. We also visited Vancouver this year with my family so the children were very excited to experience Canada for the first time. It’s just stunning, so much to see and do. I love the outdoorsy nature of Canada.

What’s your favourite book or album and why?

Wuthering Heights is an all time favourite. I studied it for A Level and still love it. Way more than just a love story, it’s quite sinister! I like the complexity.

When are you happiest?

When I am outside in the sunshine with my family. We went to Devon in half term and managed to eat outside in November in the sunshine. It was lovely! Small things can bring great joy.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Queen Victoria. She was crowned at such a young age and really changed so much across the world. Whether people liked her personally or admired what she did, she was clearly a formidable woman and a great example of a strong female character at a time when women were typically unheard.

Which one superpower would you like to possess?

Something that would enable me to get more done and better balance work and home. Who doesn’t need more time? I would say some type of speediness but I would worry that you would lose the ‘in the moment’ nature of life if I was able to rush around too quickly. So perhaps I am best left without a superpower.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Maybe that I used to have a menagerie, which included one dog, seven rabbits and two hamsters (all rescue animals). Now I just have children. I am also very tidy, neither animals nor children help with that! And that I really love ice-skating. I have already booked for the Christmas period, perhaps more for me than my children.

My youngest daughter loves this joke so I will go with it. Where do cows go at the weekend? To the moo-vies.

The final written words of Polish revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg still resonate 100 years since her death. Murdered by right-wing paramilitaries on January 15, 1919, her fate in Berlin foreshadowed the brutality of the following two decades. The German Revolution she fought for was stamped out in the chaotic aftermath of World War I. But did Luxemburg’s legacy die with it?

Luxemburg’s colossal influence on the left is still celebrated today in Germany and around the world. Her conviction that democratic socialism could flourish was rooted in her meticulous analysis of how capitalism worked and she was convinced that brutality was an inevitable feature of capitalism. Through its need for new resources and territory, Luxemburg believed capitalism would end in collapse and misery.

As her final words suggest, she saw the uncertainty of her day as an opportunity to create a fairer world. With the rise of right-wing strongmen in Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro and the ongoing crisis of climate change, we should heed her words today.

Luxemburg was born on March 5, 1871 in Zamość, a city in Russian-occupied Poland. Her parents knew from her earliest years that her congenital hip dysplasia would not stop her from pursuing a passion for justice.

She studied philosophy and economics and in 1898 was awarded a PhD in law from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, where she was also exiled and in hiding from the Russian police. Her thesis charted industrial development in Poland from the Napoleonic Wars to the latter years of the Russian Empire.

Luxemburg wrote constantly, including passionate letters to close friends and fellow feminists Clara Zetkin and Luisa Kautsky. With their correspondence she fought the loneliness of her several imprisonments between 1904 and 1906 and during World War I.

She questioned everything – challenging Karl Marx, some of his theories and her male comrades who prevaricated on war, monarchy, bureaucracy and imperialism – all of which she vehemently opposed.

Luxemburg preferred organising within the labour movement to party politics and she stood against the political class who voted for war in 1914, seeing it as a betrayal of internationalism and the common interest of workers around the world.

What is Luxemburg’s contribution to our understanding of the world today? Threatened by environmental destruction, violence against women, gross inequality, insecure and exploitative work and the rise of the far-right, her diagnosis of global capitalism is perhaps more relevant than ever.

For her, economic expansion and the resulting devastation of the environment was not a defect of global capitalism, but an inherent feature of a destructive system. In The Accumulation of Capital she explained that by definition, capital needed to conquer, absorb and destroy non-capitalist economies and territories to survive.

This is evident in the recent decision of Brazil’s new far-right president, Bolsonaro, to “integrate the Amazon region into the Brazilian economy”. This would expand the authority and reach of powerful agribusiness corporations into the Amazon Rainforest – threatening the rights and livelihoods of indigenous people and the ecosystems their lives are entwined with.

Luxemburg criticised Marx for not having paid enough attention to these external contradictions in economic growth. A socialist revolution was, for Luxemburg, the only way to stop the engulfing of non-capitalist life into capitalism.

She taught that war, colonialism and unsustainable extraction from nature are products of global capitalism. The result is the loss of irreplaceable natural wealth and people struggling for food, water and shelter in the developing world.

Luxemburg also criticised economic growth based on financial speculation and profit making in global stock markets. She argued that such a model is prone to crisis, as the 2008 crash demonstrated, which creates unemployment and job precarity that cannot be easily solved.

The economy loses the capacity to give employment to every adult with the capacity to work. Many of Luxemburg’s contemporaries, such as Eduard Bernstein, trusted that credit would alleviate capitalism’s tendencies towards crises. However, in Reform or Revolution Luxemburg argued that credit could only postpone and even intensify crisis.

Economic crises that result in this way allow the far right to stoke division within communities by turning widespread economic insecurity into a stick to beat refugees and immigrants with.

So can we save Earth from the global expansion of capital and the fascism that emerges from it? The hundredth anniversary of Luxemburg’s assassination should make us reflect on her foresight. As Luxemburg herself saw it, the choice is “socialism or barbarism”.

We are pleased to announce that Professors Peter Whiteford and Allister McGregor have joined us for three months as new Visiting Fellows.

Professor Whiteford is a Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy at The Australian National University, Canberra. Between 2008 and 2012 he worked at the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney. He previously worked as a Principal Administrator in the Directorate of Employment, Labour and Social Affairs of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris. His work at the OECD encompassed pension and welfare policies in OECD countries, Eastern Europe and China. He also worked on child poverty, family assistance policies, and welfare reform.

During his time at the IPR, Professor Whiteford will work with Professor Jane Millar on research which will explore the design of social security benefits, particularly how they can be redesigned to better suit changing work patterns and income risks associated with technological change.

Professor McGregor is Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Politics at the University of Sheffield. Prior to Sheffield, he was at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, where he was leader of Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction Team and a member of the Senior Management Group, and taught in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Bath.

While at the IPR, Professor McGregor will work on his forthcoming book ‘The Political Economy of Human Wellbeing in a Globalised World’, and continue his research on an ESRC-funded project, ‘Sustainable Care: Connecting Systems and People’, where he is analysing the political economy of inequalities in the UK social care system.

Professors Whiteford and McGregor hope to run a series of events during their time at the IPR.
